OUR

CANDIDATE

Barbara Ron

She was born to immigrant parents on January 1st, 1974, in small town Overland Park, Kansas. When she was 10 her family moved to Maryland where she then attended University of Maryland to earn her Bachelors degree in Economics, and later went on to Yale to study law. She has proudly represented Maryland in the Senate for two terms, and is running for president in order to further her  goals in helping the country keep moving forward in the right direction.

EPA REGULATIONS
One main issue that the country and the world is currently facing right now is climate change. In order to attack this issue that affects us now and will affect our children in the future. One main goal is to tax big industries that exceed on certain restrictions. For companies that have innovative ideas (energy efficient), they will receive tax breaks. Furthermore, we would set up programs for people to accommodate their changing of industries from environmentally destructive practices, therefore, not only does the environment gain from this but so does the economy.

EDUCATION

The ability to read is absolutely essential for students because reading is the basic skill needed to learn other subjects. Public schools should provide daily one on one tutoring for first graders who are having trouble reading. This method of one on one tutoring in reading has been shown effective in supporting students academically.  Tutoring prevents students from being continuously behind throughout all their classes and will help them catch up to their peers. Another prevalent issue in the education system is that the lower class is often disadvantaged by lack of experience about colleges.  Poor students who are academically successful but whose parents haven’t gone to college are much less likely to go to college because they are unfamiliar with the process of applying to college or applying for financial aid.  We are dedicated to launch programs that provide one on one counseling to students on how to get into college, and once in college, how to stay in college.  These programs have been shown to increase the number of students who go to college and stay in college under this program by about 15%.  It’s not enough to just fund programs that might work; Barbara supports programs that have been proven to work to create a lasting and positive effect on this country. Higher education is also one of our top priorities, as going to college shouldn't be a privilege, but a necessity. Community college, under Ron's administration will be free for four years to the students who have maintain a GPA of at least 2.7 throughout their college career. The federal government will cover 3/4 of the costs, while the rest will be covered by the states. This is just one more step into making our education system more accessible to students and debt-free. Education should not come with a price that will take years to repay.
PATIENT PROTECTION and AFFORDABLE CARE ACT

The main problem with Obamacare is that it doesn’t contain any effective way of controlling healthcare costs.  One way we would control these healthcare costs is to stop paying for procedures that have been shown ineffective.  An incredible amount of money is being spent on treatment that has been proven, through reliable experimentation, to not have any positive effects that couldn’t be achieved in more cost effective ways.  One example of this unnecessary spending is health insurance coverage of stents for most heart patients, a treatment that props open an artery and reduces that chance of heart attacks.  It has been shown that for most patients stents do not achieve better outcomes than much more inexpensive treatments -- namely statins, which are a type of pharmaceutical drug.  We would also fund experiments and demonstration projects with rigorous evaluations on ways to deliver healthcare more inexpensively.  One such project we would fund is transitional care for elderly hospital patients.  When the elderly are discharged from the hospital, â…“ of them end up back in the hospital within 90 days, driving up healthcare costs dramatically.  With transitional care, a nurse would visit the patient every few days after being discharged from the hospital to make sure they are taking their medication and their symptoms are under control, and they would go with the patient to their first doctor's appointment.  This has been shown in scientific studies to reduce the number of elderly who end up back in the hospital and reduce healthcare costs by 4,000 dollars per patient.
TAX REFORM

Creating a prosperous country results from creating a prosperous middle class. One way to contribute to a prosperous middle class, is to relieve them of the current tax burden. By closing tax loopholes taken advantage of by the top 1% in the country, the national deficit would decrease, and the economy would be stimulated through the reduced interest rates (resulting from the decreased deficit). More specifically, we want to close the trust fund loophole. Annually, billions of dollars escape capital gains taxation because the wealthy heirs aren’t taxed on their inheritances of vast sums of money. In addition, raising the capital gains rate on the 1% (in general) up to 29% will further relieve the middle class tax burden. Additionally, we are proponents of ensuring that no household making in excess of $1,000,000 annually should pay a smaller percentage (in income tax) than a middle class family. After closing these loopholes, we will lower the income tax for middle class Americans (adjusted percentages for specific income brackets).

FOREIGN POLICY

Our common practice of military intervention cannot be maintained as it creates more issues than it resolves. In order to have a more meaningful impact on countries that truly need assistance, we will have to focus on aiding countries with corrupt and oppressive governments by providing them with better living conditions, education, and infrastructure. By providing these countries with education opportunities, they can further their own development without as much direct aid. Our goal with these developing nations is not only to create a functional education system, but to provide the necessary apparatus required to support their people. This includes infrastructure, housing, and an agriculture program designed to create a long-lasting foundation for these nations.
